Nathalee Paolinelli + Francesco Grassi “Tutto Bene” @ Interurban, Vancouver
Currently on at the Interurban Gallery (1 E Hastings St, Vancouver), Vancouver artist Nathalee Paolinelli and Italian artist Francesco Grassi are exhibiting a collaboration of some incredibly playful and unselfconscious ceramics. The show opened on Friday, April 6 and will be open for the rest of the month.
Inspired by the people, places and things around them, Grassi and Paolinelli have made a small shrine built from fragments of their memories and some of the defining characteristics of the people in their daily lives.
“Mario’s Moustache” is dedicated to the owner of a panini shop around the corner from their home. ”Mama’s pants - 1970’s” is a small pair of bellbottom pants in honor of Grassi’s mother, and “Josh’s toques” is a miniaturized version of just that. There is also a scattering of various culinary treats: fried eggs, a hamburger, pizza slices (that sell as one and combine to make a full pizza), an abstractly rendered strip of bacon, and empty bottles.
The apparent arbitrary-ness of the objects in the shrine serves as a ceramic sketch book, documenting the lives of the artists whose partnership extends beyond the exhibition. Its lightness and sense of humor is refreshing and fitting for the time of year when the sun is beginning to shine, and is a firm reminder that tutto bene qui.
